Traumatic Brain Injuries and Falls in Seniors

March is TBI month.   There are 100,000 Minnesotans that live with a disability caused by a brain injury. The majority of brain injuries  in the United States each year occur in young children and teenagers.  Many of these brain injuries are a resulte of bicycle or car accidents.

Minnesota Leads the Nation in Brain Injuries from Falls

In Minnesota, the leading cause of brain injury is due to falls, acording to the Minnesota Brain Injury Alliance.

In the winter months due to Minnesota weather ,there are 1500-2000 more falls during December to March.  This is nearly double the amount compared to other months of the year.  Hennepin County Medical Center reported an increase of 20% in emergency room visits due to falls after a recent snow and ice storm.
