Senior Living, Older Americans Month, And One Social Senior
The Older Americans Month 2024 theme is Powered by Connection. This recognizes the profound impact that meaningful relationships and social connections have on our health and well-being. ~Administration For Community Living(.gov) Older Americans Month 2024 | ACL Administration for Community Living
Another authority said the same in the 1977 movie Oh, God! starring George Burns as God and John Denver:
Jerry Landers: “But, we need help!”
God: “That’s why I gave you each other.”
Socialization is the power behind senior living communities. Hands down. And if you’re not in a senior living community, just find your nearest senior community center for that socialization sauce. Around here one of the most active senior centers is the Lakeville Heritage Center with over 1,500 members and growing! That is where I met Cindy Jenneke.
A Social, And Spicy, Senior
After retiring from managing townhome associations in early 2018 Cindy’s physician recommended taking six months to simply unplug and recharge before jumping into anything. “So, at six months and one day I couldn’t wait to get over to the senior center to see what and who was going on.” Cindy laughed.
Cindy clearly was made to connect with others. That is no doubt why she thrived in the restaurant industry for over 30 years. As she said, “When people are together good little things always happen.” In addition to being a very active participant and volunteer – reception desk, bread collector, advisory committee, bingo caller, and more – she likes connecting.
Senior Living With Purpose
“The best part is making lots of friends. That’s what it’s really all about.” Cindy explained.
In one instance a member who was struggling with a terminal diagnosis was down and looking very resigned. Cindy sidled up to him asking what had him looking so hang dog. After explaining that he didn’t think there was much purpose remaining for him Cindy kindly set him straight reminding him of all the possibilities and people around him.
Being lifted up to see all that there was to connect with around him he was able to fill his sail and has been engaging regularly and even made a few new friendships. That is the power available in connection with others.
Smile Board and Science Discussions
Cindy saw an opportunity to set everyone’s day off right with what she called a Smile Board in the front desk area. Just a place for a funny saying where people can react and or just chuckle before their coat even comes off.
On the more educational side she has been involved in, and included others in, Science Discussions where members come up with the science topic, do the research and present the information. From Hummingbirds to Physics for Dummies there is something for everyone.
Social Butterfly or Social Director? Tomato, Tomatto
Whether participating or volunteering, Cindy’s energy is infectious. Bridget Samson the Director loves her presence. I can attest as well. In the events and presentations I’ve been involved with I always see Cindy in the mix.
Connections: Quantity and/or Quality
Whether you are the life of the party type or a quieter one, keep your connections in mind and don’t be afraid to reach out and stay social at the level that’s right for you. Like “God” said, “That’s why I gave you each other.”
“Cindy is very involved is all facets of the Heritage Center. She is passionate, creative, and enthusiastic about the cause and a wonderful ambassador for the community. Cindy makes a point of getting to know everyone and is quick to roll up her sleeves. Nothing slows her down. Knowing her makes you a better person. She is truly an asset to our community.”
