Adult Day Options, Respite for the Care Partner of Loved One with Dementia

We last wrote about adult day in 2015 when adult day centers were increasing in popularity.  Unfortunately, given the pandemic, some of the adult day centers have closed. Some are still working to reopen which we are hoping is true for Sholom in St. Paul and Salvation Army in Maplewood.  Mount Olivet has opened as well as Open Circle.

There are approximately 200 adult day centers listed in the Minnesota  Department of Human Services Active Licensing Data base.

Adult day benefits both the person with memory loss and the caregiver. Socialization for someone with memory loss and respite for the caregiver are two primary benefits. Getting your loved one to go may be difficult. Entice them to “try it out” by calling and learning of their activities to find one that you think your loved one would enjoy. Often when people attend, they are open to returning.

The average cost in the Twin Cities for adult day is approximately $90 a day. Ask how they charge. If your loved one is a veteran, find out if they qualify for benefits to pay for adult day as well as transportation to and from. As you consider options, some questions you can ask: length of time in existence, length of service of staff and staff ratios, what assistance and services they provide.
