This month, the month of Love is a great time to record some meaningful stories about your loved one. Even if your loved has memory loss and is in assisted living or memory care she or he will remember events from long ago. Capturing stories by video is so easy today with a smartphone. Or find some old pictures and write a story to go along with them. Is there a family member or friend that is a good writer if you are not and can help with capturing the story? It’s easy to take pictures of old pictures to put them into a book today by using Shutterfly for example. If you are a Costco member they also provide something similar. Some ideas that may spark some stories are:
- Valentines Days that were special and why they remember it and have them tell the story.
- If your elderly loved one was or is married, ask them to tell you about their courtship days. How did they meet? Why were they attracted to their future spouse? What are 2-3 of your favorite memories when you were dating?
- What have they learned about love. What advice do they have for their younger family members?
- Was there a time when they were away from your“true love” for a period of time? Have them tell how they got through this and what impact it had on their relationship. What were 1-2 of the favorite things you did with your loved one that made you happy?
Taking time to record these stories now will be appreciated years down the road by many in your family. And if you are a senior yourself reading this, why not capture a story or stories you want shared and saved for your grandchildren and great grandchildren. What a gift of Love!
