There are more than 53 million family caregivers in the United States in 2020 according to a AARP and National Alliance for Caregiving study. That is 9 million more than five years ago.
Caregiving can take a toll on a person’s health. Studies have shown that about 30% of caregivers pass away before the person they are caring for.
Over 60 percent of all caregivers are also working a separate job.
Help the One Who Helps Another
Families might consider finding ways to give the primary care giver a break by doing one or more of the following:
- Offer to take-over caregiving so the primary caregiver can have a break.
- Hire a caregiver for a week so the primary caregiver can take a vacation
- Treat your loved one to a respite stay at an assisted living the offers activities that they like.
- Help the caregiver sign up for an online support group.
