Christian “CJ” Jackman – Director of Maintenance – Hayden Grove, Bloomington
Jack of all trades – More like Ace of all trades
Director of Maintenance is a bone fide profession involving a whole constellation of skills. And they go far beyond building materials and mechanicals. CJ is a shining example of one who is master of his galaxy.
Like many at a Director level, the path was more accumulation of experience than one program. Early on CJ worked with two area custom homes builders. Over 7 years he earned the role of Assistant Superintendent. It requires learning all the trades enough to keep sub-contractors in sequence and on time.
CJ simultaneously did caretaking of an apartment complex – 320 units. That included constant problem solving across the trades plus the smooth skill of customer relations. Other experiences include work with a concrete supplier, first responders, CNA, and aviation.
For CJ senior living work began with Dominium at Grainwood Senior Living in Prior Lake. He made the most of their leadership training earning a Star Performer award among others. He also added digital maintenance to his tool box. As much as he appreciated Dominium, serendipity pried him away.
While walking his dog near his home he couldn’t help but explore that new building that just opened. That’s when he met Lyn Smasal, Hayden Grove’s Director of Sales. One thing led to another and he found a great connection with Great Lakes Management. His first anniversary was this February and he loves his role.
Senior Living Servant
CJ’s talent at maintenance allows him to always deliver on Job One – keeping the building running smoothly. He said “First, make sure that the E.D. can conduct business without interruption from the facility. I always start the day with my walking inspections.” This efficiency gives him the room to get into his higher gear, responding to and engaging with his residents. Here is how he describes it.
“A past co-worker told me ‘Other places are gloomy, but when you’re here there is energy!’ I do my best every day and always make it my business to call everyone by their first name or ask if I don’t remember. I leave my life at home and I serve our residents in their home. My biggest joy is helping with their smallest troubles, which can be a big anxiety for them. I adopt their viewpoint about their belongings. Whether the microwave being out or their keys that fell down the elevator shaft!, their problem is my #1 until that bit of their life is back on track.”
“CJ has so much passion for the work he does. Each resident has numerous stories of how he has turned their day around or made an impact on their lives. CJ is an amazing employee and a big part of what makes Hayden Grove such a great place!” said Carter Lindner, Hayden Grove’s Executive Director.
In the end I wasn’t surprised when CJ mentioned he is also working on becoming a Chaplain for the Red Cross.
