Minnesota has a growing number of residential care homes. In this setting, typically there are 4-7 residents in a home located within a residential neighborhood. Each resident is in a private or shared room and may have a private or shared bathroom. Because of the smaller, more intimate setting, there is a higher level of attention given to each resident.
Staffing levels are the highest in this setting with often a 1:3 ratio during the day and evening and 1:6 overnight. Because of the smaller setting, it is important to understand which type of residents enjoy this option. Some homes focus primarily on memory care while others might specialize in a specific diagnosis like Parkinson’s.
Residential Homes: A Great Alternative to a Nursing Home
Recently, a client’s mother moved from a care center/nursing home to a residential home. The client wanted to look at options a month or so ago as he was unhappy with the care in the center. He wasn’t a fan of the small rooms and the likelihood that his mom would need to share a room when she moved from short-term care (rehabilitation) to long-term care.
I met with the client to understand her needs which were many. I recommended several options that could provide the high level of care that was needed: 1) an assisted living that had a care suite, 2) an assisted living known for their high level of care in a small environment of 12, and 3) a residential home.
