Understanding Care Levels in Minnesota Assisted Living Facilities
Choosing an assisted living community for yourself or a loved one is one of the most important decisions a family can make. In Minnesota, assisted living facilities provide a wide range of services designed to support older adults as their care needs change over time. Understanding the different care levels available can help families make informed decisions and plan for future needs.
Whether you’re searching in Minneapolis, Saint Paul, or Minnetonka, understanding how care levels work can help you find the right fit for your loved one.
What Are Care Levels in Assisted Living?
While Minnesota regulations require licensed assisted living facilities to assess each resident’s needs and develop an individualized service plan, many communities also use internal “care levels” to determine the amount of assistance a resident requires. These care levels influence monthly fees and services provided.
Although terminology varies from one provider to another, most assisted living communities offer several levels of care.
The level of care needed will depend upon how much time it takes to provide the assistance a person needs. The more time it takes to provide care the higher the level of care will be.
In most assisted living and memory care facilities, there will be from four to six levels of care. People needing minimal assistance could be at level one. Care tasks may include:
- Medication administration
- Shower assistance
- Reminders for meals and activities
A person needing help using the bathroom, getting in/out of bed or needing more time will be at a higher level of care.
Two people receiving the same type of assistance could be at different levels of care. Jerry moved into assisted living. He needed someone to manage his medications and assistance with a shower twice each week. Based on his assessment he was at level one. The time it takes to provide this care is minimal. Joyce also moved into assisted living. She needed the same type of help that Jerry did. It took the staff longer because Joyce needed more time to complete the same tasks. Her level of care was three.
The marketing materials may not list every level of care. You can avoid a surprise by asking how many levels of care a community has.
Ala-Carte Services
There are some assisted living facilities that do have ala-carte care services. This means that a senior pays a monthly charge for each service they need help with. For example, if it costs $250.00 to receive one shower each week then that is what the cost for that care is each month. Each additional care would have its own monthly charge associated with it.
How are Care Levels Determined?
One of the most frequently question is, how much is it going to cost to live in assisted living? It’s also one of the toughest questions to provide a clear answer. Care costs are determined after you chose where you want to live.
Once a person decides they want to move to assisted living, they reserve the apartment. After the reservation a nurse will schedule an assessment with the potential resident. That assessment will determine what the care level will be and at the same time the cost of care. As senior living advisors, we can estimate what the cost and level of care may be. We will not know the exact amount until after a nurse does an assessment.
Care levels can change. They are fluid and can go up or down depending upon care needs.
Finding the Right Community
Every senior’s journey is unique. Some residents may remain at a lower care level for years, while others may require enhanced services or memory care sooner. The best assisted living communities take a personalized approach, adapting care plans as needs evolve.
Families throughout the Twin Cities have access to a wide range of senior living options designed to provide comfort, safety, and quality of life.
By understanding care levels and planning, families can make confident decisions that support their loved one’s health, independence, and well-being for years to come. Finding the right care can be complicated.
