EXPERTISE Definition: Expert skill or knowledge in a particular field
Becoming an expert in any field takes education, time and dedication. In the area of serving older adults, it means being aware of the many joys, changes and challenges that come with aging.
At Choice Connections we carry the designation of Certified Senior Advisor. In earning that certification, we studied many subjects that pertain to getting older. However, our learning does not, and should not, stop there.
Each year, we continue our education by attending classes, lectures or conferences. Our knowledge is not only reinforced, but we also often hear new and valuable information.
One way we stay up on current research and trends is with support from The Society of Certified Senior Advisors. They offer on-line classes, articles, blogs and podcasts. And along with a quarterly magazine – all designed to illuminate ways of aging well. They offer the latest research findings and/or trends. For example, this quarter’s issue includes:
Ageless Aging – “New research shows our genetics play only a minor role in determining our lifespan.” It highlights excerpts from a book written by Maddy Dychtwald that offers women tools to reframe the concept of aging and live well into older life.
Accessible Travel – “wanderlust doesn’t come with an age limit. As travelers age, needs may shift, but the desire to explore out incredible planet remains. The world is more accessible, and with preparation, many can have the trip of their lifetime.” In this article there is travel advice and options for people with challenges like balance issues, hearing or vision loss, back and leg pain. We also learn ways in which the travel industry is working to become more inclusive and removing barriers for those with disabilities.
Exploring the Intersection of Faith and Senior Care. Nurturing Spiritual Well-being in communities for older adults. Topics include, but are not limited to:
- Housing Options – some independent, assisted living and memory care communities are faith-based. They often integrate religious practices and values into the daily lives of residents. Some may also have on-site Chaplains for resident support.
- Community and Social activities – these social gatherings and outings may align with a resident’s religious beliefs.
- Healthcare services – some places also include healthcare facilities or a partnership with medical providers to ensure older adults receive appropriate healthcare in accordance with their values.
- End-of- life care – communities may offer hospice services that focus on incorporating spiritual and emotional support during the dying process.
The articles are diverse and informative. Sometimes included are stories from people who offer personal insights after experiencing things like travel mishaps or more serious subjects like losing a spouse or living with Alzheimer’s.
Whether we are at a conference, taking on-line classes, networking with other professionals or reading an article – it is all about staying educated and engaged in our roles as CSAs so we can better serve our clients.
